John McKay Named USC’s Associate Athletic Director for Football
Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro LLP (JMBM) congratulates John McKay, an attorney in JMBM’s National Sports Law Group, on his new position as the Associate Athletic Director for Football at the University of Southern California. McKay will join new USC Athletic Director Pat Haden and will serve as a liaison between Trojan coach Lane Kiffen and the school’s administration.
McKay has over 35 years experience in football, as a player and management in both college and professional leagues. He played football at USC with Haden on two national championship teams and in three Rose Bowls, and was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1998. McKay played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1976 to 1979, and later served as an assistant to the team’s president and general manager.
“I have gained tremendous experience and great friendships through my law practice,” said McKay. “As I move into my new role at USC, I am confident that my colleagues at Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro will continue to provide outstanding service to the Firm’s sports clients.”
After becoming a lawyer, McKay remained involved in football, representing the Buccaneers in relocation negotiations and working with the team to build a new stadium in Tampa. He negotiated the renovation of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the Executive Director of Football Operations for Majestic Realty Co./New Coliseum Partners, and also served as general manager of the Los Angeles Xtreme XFL team.
McKay received a J.D. from Stetson University College of Law in 1982 and a B.A. from USC in 1975. Seventeen of McKay’s colleagues at JMBM are also USC alumni.
